However, perhaps no one has become so synonymous with greed then Charles Dickens immortal miser, Ebenezer Scrooge. Seuss’ Grinch is certainly known for his greed, to the point if you call someone a “Grinch”, they know they’re being a major killjoy during the holiday season, even if they don’t commit larceny and breaking and entering to back up the insult. However, for every enduring positive symbol like Santa, then it stands to reason that there must be an equal, or opposite, symbol of the holiday season. Santa Claus is an enduring symbol of generosity, giving and compassionate. So too is it with characters associated with Christmas. Hyde has become an enduring icon of a person’s duality. Hercules and Superman have become short hand metaphors for possessing great physical strength. A young love-struck couple will be called a regular “Romeo and Juliet” even if their fate is not the same as the couple from Shakespeare’s play. Thus, a trouble making scamp will be compared to Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer. Perhaps one sign of an enduring literary figure is how they can become synonymous with a certain concept, even to the point that even those who have never read the work in question generally know what someone is referencing.
